From Admission to Doctoral Degree

There are many steps from admission to a doctoral degree. You will have an individual study plan, a supervisor to help you along the way and somewhat four years later you will defend your thesis at a dissertation.

To be admitted to doctoral studies you must meet the general entry requirements. In some subject areas you must also meet the specific entry requirements as laid down in the general study syllabus for the subject area in question. Only applicants who can be offered supervision and otherwise acceptable conditions for study as well as financing will be admitted to doctoral studies. The most common way of financing doctoral studies is through a PhD position.

As a doctoral student you should have at least two supervisors, a principal supervisor and one or more assistant supervisors. The head of the department is responsible for appointing the supervisors within one month of the admission decision.

Individual study plan

The Individual study plan includes a plan for the remaining parts of your study programme, such as courses, seminars, and conferences et cetera, and also documents of already completed parts in the study programme.

The doctoral studies

Doctoral studies comprise of a number of courses and a doctoral thesis. Doctoral studies comprise of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and end with a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. It is also possible to finish the education with a Licentiate Degree (120 credits).

A doctoral thesis comprises a minimum of 120 credits. The thesis can be a compilation thesis, which is a term used in Nordic countries that is a collection of already-published research papers with an introductory section, or a monograph, which is one coherent volume.

In parallel to your doctoral studies, it is common that you also teach undergraduate students at the degree programmes and courses.

The dissertation is the public defence of your thesis. A chairperson leads the dissertation. A specially appointed faculty examiner (opponent) is to review the thesis and an examining committee comprising three or five members is to assess the quality of the thesis and your defence of the thesis. The thesis will be graded with pass (G) or fail (U).

Doctoral degree

For a degree of doctor it requires that you both have written and publicly defended a doctoral thesis and also have completed the courses that is required in accordance with the general study syllabi for the third-cycle subject you are admitted to. You must apply for your degree certificate yourself. The Section of degrees issues the degree certificate provided that all the requirements (approved thesis and courses) are fulfilled.

Conferment of Doctoral Degrees

The University's major ceremonial occasion is the Conferment of Doctoral Degrees, which takes place annually during the latter part of October. At the ceremony new doctors will receive their insignia as a confirmation of their position at the University.
